Kathmandu: Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Ramnath Adhikari has said that yak farming is contributing significantly to the income generation, food and nutrition security, organic farming and maintaining environmental balance of the mountainous region.
Addressing a programme organized by the Ministry on the occasion of the First National Yak Day on Sunday, Minister Adhikari stressed the need for concerted efforts for yak farming as the number of yaks in Nepal is declining due to geographical challenges, migration, lack of grazing area, breeding problems, invasion of wild animals and climate change.
Minister Adhiakri said Food security, climate adaptation, conservation of biodiversity and empowerment of rural lifestyle are the common goals of the mountainous region through conservation and sustainable use of yaks.
On the occasion, Minister Adhikari stressed that it was our shared responsibility to give new life to the yaks, which have become an inseparable part of the Himalayan life, through conservation, reform and commercial transformation.
Stating that the government has decided to observe the 7th of Baishakh every year as per the Nepali calendar as the National Yak Day by recognising the importance of yaks, at the initiative of the Ministry.
Minister Adhikari said that the Yak Genetic Resource Centre has been brought into operation at Syangboche of Solukhumbu for the conservation and promotion of yaks.
