KATHMANDU: The government has decided to observe National Mourning Day on September 17 (Ashwin 1).
Monday’s Cabinet meeting decided to mark the day with a nationwide holiday, Law Minister Om Prakash Aryal said also The government has decided to form a judicial inquiry commission to investigate the violent incidents that took place during the two-day Gen G movement.
Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal informed that the cabinet meeting held on Monday after the expansion of the interim cabinet decided to form a judicial inquiry commission. He said that although there has been a principled decision to form the commission, no decision has been made on the office bearers of the commission.
He said, “A decision will be made after the selection of the person to sit on the commission and the availability of such persons.” Aryal said that the cabinet also discussed the formation of a commission to investigate property, but no decision has been made.
He said, “There are agencies like the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, the National Vigilance Center. There is a need for further discussion on how to take this forward.” The government has confirmed that 72 people died during the Gen G movement held on Bhadra 23 and 24. Of these, 3 are policemen and the others are protesters.
Similarly, government buildings including the Parliament Building, Singha Durbar, and the Supreme Court, as well as the residences of leaders and private business establishments, were set on fire and looted.
