KATHMANDU: Chetanarayan Acharya, Deputy Leader of the Parliamentary Party of CPN (UML), has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Lumbini State.
According to the statement issued by the spokesperson of the office of the State chief, Dharma Aryal Belbase, Acharya has been appointed as the chief minister by the State chief Amik Sherchan according to sub-section 2 of Article 168 of the Constitution of Nepal.
The newly appointed Chief Minister Acharya claimed the support of 29 members from CPN (UML) and 27 from Nepali Congress, totaling 56 members of the State Assembly, in his bid presented to the State Chief today.
Former Chief Minister Jokh Bahadur Mahara had tendered his resignation on Sunday, which was accepted, paving the way for the formation of a new government under Article 168(2) of the Constitution of Nepal, with the support of at least two or more parties with representation in the State Assembly.
The call for Chief Ministerial claims was scheduled until 6:30 PM today.
