KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been relieved of his position after failing to secure a vote of confidence in parliament.
He was dismissed from his position after his motion for a vote of confidence was turned down in the House of Representatives on Friday.
Out of the 258 lawmakers present in parliament, 63 lawmakers from the CPN (Maoist Centre), CPN (Unified Socialist), and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) backed him, while 194 opposed him. One lawmaker chose to remain neutral, informed by Speaker Devraj Ghimire.
Prime Minister Dahal required 138 votes in his favor to secure the confidence vote. This is the fifth instance during his tenure as Prime Minister that he has sought a vote of confidence.
With PM Dahal losing the vote, CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli is now expected to become the next Prime Minister with the support of the Nepali Congress.
The next session of the House of Representatives is scheduled for Sunday, July 14, at 3 pm.
