KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has issued a stern reminder to all parties involved regarding the imperative adherence to the Election Code of Conduct for the forthcoming April 27 by-elections for the House of Representatives (HoR) in Ilam-2 and the State Assembly in Bajhang-1.

Emphasizing the gravity of any breach of the current Election Code of Conduct, the EC cautioned of potential legal consequences.

It explicitly cautioned against the misuse of social media platforms or any other activities that contravened the Election Code of Conduct.

The EC underscored the paramount importance of fostering a climate conducive to free, fair, and unbiased elections, affirming that the Election Code of Conduct would remain enforceable until the conclusion of the electoral process.

Shaligram Sharma Paudel, the spokesperson for the Election Commission (EC), highlighted specific prohibitions, including the dissemination of false or deceptive information, propaganda, and offensive remarks on social media platforms.

Moreover, any manipulation or tampering with material to influence election outcomes is deemed unlawful.

To ensure adherence, a district code of conduct monitoring committee, headed by the Chief Election Officer, has been established.

Additionally, the EC is in the process of setting up a dedicated social media monitoring unit to promptly address any violations and implement necessary measures.

To support responsible media coverage, the EC will liaise with Nepal’s Press Council to encourage the distribution of trustworthy, safe, and unbiased material.

This includes discouraging unpleasant or deceptive content about the election and taking swift action against any such items.
