KATHMANDU: In a historic endeavor marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Nepal and the Republic of Korea (RoK), a joint expedition comprising three Nepali climbers and seven Korean mountaineers is set to conquer the towering summit of Mt Jugal, standing at an impressive height of 6,591 meters.

The team will embark on this challenging mountaineering expedition in Sindhupalchok, as announced by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA).

The ascent of Mt Jugal holds profound significance, not only as a remarkable feat of mountaineering but also as a symbol of the enduring friendship between Nepal and the RoK.

As the nearest peak to Kathmandu, Mt Jugal serves as an ideal backdrop for this historic collaboration.

The initiative for this expedition was spearheaded by the collective efforts of the NMA, Nepal Tourism Board, and the Jugal Rural Municipality of Sindhupalchok.

Mr. Mohan Lamsal, the general-secretary of NMA, expressed confidence that this maiden ascent would significantly contribute to the promotion of tourism in Nepal, emphasizing its importance in the realm of tourism diplomacy.

Mt Jugal, once restricted, was officially opened for climbing by the government on April 11, 2023.

This decision reflects Nepal’s commitment to fostering adventure tourism and exploring new avenues for mountaineering enthusiasts.

Alongside Mt Jugal, five other peaks in the Jugal mountain range have also been made accessible for mountaineering activities.

The joint expedition will be led by renowned Korean mountaineer and honorary Nepali citizen, Aum Hong Gill, representing the South Korean contingent, and distinguished climber and NMA’s first vice-president, Dawa Yangzum Sherpa, leading the Nepali team.

Adding to the grandeur of the expedition, a group of 50 South Korean trekkers will accompany the team, further enhancing the cultural exchange and camaraderie between the two nations.

As the climbers set their sights on the majestic summit of Mt Jugal, the journey represents not only a test of physical endurance but also a celebration of collaboration, friendship, and the spirit of adventure that transcends borders.
