KATHMANDU: The United States has expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the devastating flash floods in Nepal’s Rasuwa district.

In a statement, the US said its thoughts were with all those affected by the disaster. The US State Department said it is closely monitoring the situation and is deploying a disaster response adviser to the region to support ongoing response efforts.

The Department said it will also provide $500,000 in assistance through its global award with Catholic Relief Services. The assistance will support emergency shelter, relief supplies, and water, sanitation and hygiene services for flood-affected communities.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Kathmandu said it is working with local authorities to locate and assist US citizens in the affected areas.

The embassy has urged US citizens in Nepal who require urgent assistance related to the floods to contact the embassy at KathmanduACS@state.gov. It has also advised US citizens in affected areas to monitor local news, follow instructions from local authorities and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive safety and emergency information.

US citizens seeking information about family members in Nepal can call 1-888-407-4747 toll-free from the United States and Canada, or 1-202-501-4444 from other locations.
