MYAGDI: Sobangdhuri, a scenic high-altitude destination in Raghuganga Rural Municipality–7, Myagdi, remains underdeveloped despite its strong potential as a trekking and tourism hub.

Located at an altitude of 3,940 meters, Sobangdhuri offers panoramic views of some of Nepal’s major mountain peaks, along with spectacular sunrise vistas. However, the absence of a well-developed trekking route and basic infrastructure has limited its ability to attract tourists.

According to local resident and tourism entrepreneur Tara Garbuja Pun, a trekking route connecting Chimkhola to Sobangdhuri was identified two years ago, but a lack of investment and promotion has hindered progress.

“If government agencies support community-level initiatives, Sobangdhuri could be developed into a major tourist destination,” he said.

The area, which lies along the Dhaulagiri Icefall trekking route connecting Myagdi and Mustang, provides breathtaking views of mountains including Dhaulagiri (8,167 meters), Annapurna, Nilgiri, Machhapuchhre, and Manaslu.

Visitors can also observe nearby landmarks such as Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, Punhill, Mohare Danda, and surrounding rural landscapes.

A 27-member team recently trekked to Sobangdhuri to promote the destination and produced a music video highlighting its natural beauty. The region is currently covered in snow, while spring brings vibrant blooms of rhododendrons along the trail. Wildlife such as ghoral and deer, as well as various medicinal herbs, are also found in the area.

Local efforts have led to the development of basic facilities, including a shelter with a capacity of 20 people, water storage drums, and a public toilet. However, the absence of hotels and restaurants means visitors must carry their own supplies.

The trekking route—from Chimkhola through Patlekhet, Jaslang, Sijikhola, and others —can be completed in one to two days, depending on pace. From Sobangdhuri, routes extend to Begkhola, Dowa, Bhurung Tatopani, Dana, and Lete in Mustang.

Despite these developments, locals emphasize that improved infrastructure, promotion, and coordinated government support are essential to unlocking Sobangdhuri’s full tourism potential.
