KATHMANDU: The Election Commission Nepal on Thursday distributed certificates to 110 lawmakers elected under the proportional representation (PR) system of the House of Representatives.

At a program held in Kathmandu, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari, along with commissioners Janaki Kumari Tuladhar and Sagun Shumsher Rana, welcomed the newly elected members. Secretary of the Commission and chief election officer for the PR system Krishna Bahadur Raut distributed the certificates.

Speaking at the event, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Bhandari expressed confidence that the new Parliament would seriously consider reforms to the electoral system in line with constitutional provisions.

He underscored the need to amend relevant laws in preparation for the 2027 local and provincial elections. Bhandari also noted that conducting provincial and local elections simultaneously could help reduce costs.

Under the proportional representation system, the Rastriya Swatantra Party secured the highest number of seats with 57 lawmakers elected. The Nepali Congress won 20 seats, followed by the CPN-UML with 16 and the Nepali Communist Party with nine seats.

Similarly, the Shram Sanskriti Party and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party secured four seats each under the PR system.

The Commission had earlier published the PR election results on March 15. Under the first-past-the-post system, the Rastriya Swatantra Party emerged as the largest party with 125 seats, followed by Nepali Congress with 18, CPN-UML with nine, Nepal Communist Party with eight, Shram Sanskriti Party with three, and one seat each secured by Rastriya Prajatantra Party and an independent candidate.
