KATHMANDU: The government has decided to observe September 8 every year as Gen-Z Martyrs’ Day.

Government spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Jagadish Kharel, informed that Monday’s Cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar passed the decision to commemorate those who lost their lives during the Gen-Z movement.

The meeting also decided that the Ministry of Home Affairs will provide identification cards with photographs to parents, spouses, and unmarried sons and daughters of individuals martyred during the Gen-Z movement.

Likewise, the Cabinet fixed a new cash transaction limit, deciding that any purchase, sale, or business transaction worth five lakh rupees or more must be conducted through a financial institution or banking instrument starting from January 15, 2027.

Additionally, the government has decided to provide USD 200,000 in assistance to the Government of Sri Lanka following the recent floods and landslides that caused significant loss of life and property.

The meeting also approved the appointment of Professor Gyan Bahadur Thapa as Secretary of the University Grants Commission, nominated Dr. Kuma Sharma Acharya as Chairperson of the Press Council Nepal, endorsed the Carbon Trade Regulation 2082, and promoted Baikuntha Prasad Aryal to the position of Secretary.
