In recent years, digital journalism has been expanding rapidly within Nepal’s media landscape. Amid this growth, Khoj Samachar, an online platform initiated by journalist Roshan Shrestha, has positioned itself as a voice focused on alternative and socially responsible reporting.
Khoj Samachar was officially registered on July 22, 2021 (2078 Sawan 7 B.S.) with Nepal’s Department of Information and Broadcasting and the Press Council Nepal. It currently operates under Bethel Media House Pvt. Ltd., based in Kathmandu Metropolitan City–32, Pepsi-Cola.
The platform delivers content in the Nepali language, using both written and video formats. According to Shrestha, the core mission of Khoj Samachar is to raise awareness about corruption, social malpractice, and national concerns, particularly among youth.
Since its inception, the platform has focused on themes such as political awareness, public accountability, and independent journalism. The team currently includes five full-time staff members, with Pushpa Tamang serving as the editorial lead.
Khoj Samachar has also built a significant digital presence. With over 800,000 followers on Facebook and more than 45,000 subscribers on YouTube, the platform is known for its direct and engaging style of communication with the public.
Expanding beyond journalism, Shrestha recently launched the “Roshan Shrestha” mobile app, which aims to inform citizens about issues such as online fraud, public service accessibility, and social accountability. The app is available on both Android and iOS platforms.
Public Perception and Criticism:
Khoj Samachar and its founder have also faced public scrutiny regarding the perceived neutrality of some of its content. On social media, some viewers have expressed concern over the frequent positive coverage of emerging political figures and alternative candidates, such as Balen Shah, Harka Sampang, and Gopal Hamal.
Critics suggest that certain reporting may lean favorably toward these individuals, raising questions about editorial balance. However, such criticisms are based on viewer opinion and have not been backed by any formal complaints or investigations.
In recent reports, the platform appears to have taken steps toward more balanced coverage, and there is no publicly available evidence of regulatory or legal action against either Khoj Samachar or its founder.
Conclusion:
Khoj Samachar represents a growing trend of alternative digital journalism in Nepal. Despite limited resources, the platform continues to produce content centered on public interest and social issues. As it evolves, it reflects both the opportunities and challenges of independent media in a digitally connected society.
