KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel has stressed the need for an effective parliamentary role to ensure government accountability and responsiveness to the people.

Speaking at an event organized by the Inter-Legislative Forum, Nepal, President Paudel said that Parliament should take a proactive stance in strengthening federalism, good governance, transparency, and the rule of law.

“The responsibility now lies on you to make the role of Parliament more effective in making the government responsible and accountable to the people,” he said, highlighting the importance of addressing the people’s burning issues and enacting necessary laws.

President Paudel acknowledged public dissatisfaction with the lack of significant legislative progress and the insufficient discussion of pressing issues within Parliament. He urged parliamentary leaders to eliminate such shortcomings and make the legislature a platform where the voices of sovereign citizens are heard.

He also called for extra commitment to building a capable, accountable, and people-responsive parliament, reflecting on the importance of learning from parliamentary practices.

Furthermore, President Paudel underscored the need for Parliament to establish itself as a hub for effective lawmaking, budget formulation, policy formulation, and public advocacy.
