KATHMANDU: Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Nepal, led by Upendra Yadav, has decided not to support the controversial land ordinance, blocking the government’s path to passing the bill in the National Assembly.

Following JSP’s decision, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli called a meeting of the high-level political mechanism on Tuesday. However, Yadav revealed that neither the Prime Minister nor leaders from the government-backed coalition contacted him after the meeting.

“We have already made our decision. There have been no talks with government-backed leaders or the Prime Minister after that,” Yadav told Khabarhub on Wednesday. “I suggest the government withdraw the land ordinance. This is not in the interest of the country.”

While the ordinance was discussed in Tuesday evening’s mechanism meeting, details of the discussions have not been made public.

The JSP parliamentary party, in its meeting in Kathmandu, determined that the ordinance could not be supported as it aimed to distribute government land to individuals.

With JSP’s firm opposition, the government’s efforts to pass the ordinance now face a significant hurdle in the National Assembly.
