BAKU (AZERBAIJAN): President Ramchandra Paudel has said climate change is the major problem of the world.

The President made this remark in a meeting with Azerbaijan’s Minister for Justice, Farid Turab Ahmadov here today.

On the occasion he stressed that COP29 should goad the developed countries to reduce carbon emission and to invest the funds that they have committed to the climate fund as well as to provide climate funds to the developing countries which are bearing the brunt of the climate change impact despite their miniscule carbon emission, the President’s Press Advisor Kiran Pokharel said.

According to Pokharel, Azerbaijan’s Minister for Justice Ahmadov on the occasion said that this itself was the main agenda at COP29, stressing the need of doing justice to the developing countries.

The Minister stated that although Azerbaijan did not have tall mountains like Nepal’s, the water sources have started to dry up due to rapid snow melting in his country as well.

President Paudel arrived in Baku, Azerbaijan, this afternoon, leading a high-level Nepali delegation to attend the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Upon arrival at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, President Paudel was warmly welcomed by Azerbaijan’s Minister for Justice Ahmadov.

The President’s entourage includes First Lady Sabita Paudel, along with key advisors, experts, and senior government officials.

Minister for Forests and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi had already arrived in Baku to participate in COP29.

During the Convention, President Paudel is scheduled to address a high-level session of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit, a key event within COP29. Furthermore, he will moderate a separate high-level session on behalf of Nepal to draw the world’s attention to its specific agenda of climate change.

COP29 officially began today and will continue until November 21. President Paudel will be returning home on November 15.
