KATHMANDU: The main opposition party, the Maoist Center, has announced that they will continue to disrupt parliamentary proceedings until the term ‘violence’ is removed from the official record.
They view the use of this term in reference to the ‘People’s War’ as an attempt to undermine the Federal Parliament and humiliate their struggle.
At a parliamentary party meeting held at Singha Durbar on Friday, the Maoist Center resolved to maintain their obstruction of parliament until a satisfactory resolution is reached.
They have insisted that this issue must be addressed to rectify what they perceive as an insult to their struggle.
During the meeting, Chairman of Maoist Center Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda criticized the use of the term ‘violence’ as a deliberate attempt to demean the peace agreement.
The term was used by CPN-UML MP Yogesh Bhattarai in his remarks during a House of Representatives meeting, where he described the ‘People’s War’ as ‘violence.’
Following objections from the Maoist Center, Speaker Devraj Ghimire directed the Secretariat to investigate the issue.
After the investigation, Speaker Ghimire announced that the term would not be removed from the parliamentary records.
Chief Whip Hitraj Pandey conveyed the Maoist Center’s decision, stating, “We will continue our blockade until this issue is resolved and the term ‘violence’ is removed. The insult to our movement must be corrected.”
Pandey criticized the Speaker’s ruling, arguing that it contradicted the peace agreement and was made hastily.
He indicated that the Maoists would continue to challenge the decision, asserting that the ruling focused solely on the term ‘violence’ rather than addressing the broader implications for their historical narrative.
