KATHMANDU: Following recent violence in Bangladesh that resulted in at least 300 deaths, Sheikh Hasina, leader of the Awami League, stepped down as Prime Minister on Monday.

She landed at the Hindon Indian Air Force base near Delhi around 6 pm on Monday.

Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, Army Chief Waker-uz-Zaman, in a national address, announced that the military would form an interim government.

Fierce clashes were reported across Bangladesh on Sunday, with casualties rising to at least 300, according to an AFP report.

Earlier today, protesters initiated a ‘Long March to Dhaka’ defying the nationwide curfew.

They called for Prime Minister Hasina’s resignation.

Hasina earlier accused the demonstrators of “sabotage” and cut off mobile internet services.

Meanwhile, India’s Border Security Force issued a high alert along the India-Bangladesh border in light of the situation.
