KATHMANDU: Nepal has emerged victorious in the 8th South Asian Karate Championship, securing a total of eight gold medals on the tournament’s opening day in Thimphu, Bhutan.

Alisa Raskoti Magar triumphed in the senior women’s category, while Swornim Manandhar clinched gold in the men’s category for Nepal.

Similarly, Sanju Deshar and Rehan Jawed claimed gold medals in the women’s under-21 and men’s categories, respectively.

Both Alisa and Swornim defeated their Indian opponents in the finals, showcasing Nepal’s prowess in the competition.

Sanju secured her gold by defeating Bhusal, while Rehan dominated his Indian counterpart in the final match.

However, Nepal’s Amrit Thokar was defeated by an Indian player in the junior men’s category, settling for silver.

Renisha Rimal also earned a silver medal after losing to a Sri Lankan competitor in the final.

According to the Nepal Karate Federation, Nepal excelled in various categories, including senior and junior divisions for both men and women.

The championship was inaugurated by Bhutan’s Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck on Thursday, with over 200 karate athletes and more than 4,000 officials from Nepal, Bhutan, India, and Sri Lanka participating.

Competitions are being held across different weight categories in cadet, junior, under-21, and senior divisions throughout the two-day event.
