Kawasoti, Nawalparasi East – June 13, 2024
An hour ago, a tragic accident occurred in Falful Chowk, Kawasoti. Three women were working on a drainage project when the trench they were in suddenly collapsed and was buried by soil. A rescue team led by B. Paudel arrived quickly and managed to pull out two of the women. Sadly, both of them were declared dead at the hospital. The search for the third woman is still ongoing. The whole community is in shock and mourning, praying for the safe return of the missing woman. Everyone is deeply saddened by this heartbreaking incident.
This accident in Kawasoti highlights serious issues in Nepal’s construction industry. Many construction sites do not follow safety rules properly, putting workers and the public at risk.
Last year, there were over 50 construction accidents in Nepal. More than 30 workers died, and many others were injured. In one incident, a pedestrian bridge collapsed in Pokhara, killing three people and injuring others.
Many of these accidents happen because basic safety measures are not followed. Contractors often ignore the rules, and there are no proper construction managers to oversee the projects. Workers often do not get enough training, and poor-quality materials are used. For example, a scaffolding collapse in Kathmandu last year killed four workers because of weak support and bad materials.
The government has promised to fix these problems, but change has been slow. To prevent more tragedies, it’s important to enforce building rules strictly and hold contractors accountable. Workers need better safety standards and training.
As Nepal builds more infrastructure, keeping workers and the public safe should be a top priority. The Kawasoti incident is a sad reminder that we need urgent changes to make construction sites safer for everyone.
