KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ is set to seek a vote of confidence for the fourth time on May 20.

Dahal, who has been leading the government for 17 months, is preparing to seek this vote in accordance with Nepal’s constitutional requirements.

Prachanda first secured a vote of confidence on 10 Jan 2023, after being appointed Prime Minister on 25 Dec 2022, with the support of a then-current coalition.

He sought and obtained his second vote of confidence on March 20, 2023, following the formation of a new coalition.

Subsequently, after breaking ties with the Nepali Congress and forming a new coalition with the CPN-UML, Dahal secured his third vote of confidence on March 13

The upcoming fourth vote of confidence has been necessitated by the exit of the Janata Samajwadi Party, which withdrew its support and left the government on May 13.

According to the constitutional provision, a Prime Minister must seek a vote of confidence within 30 days if a coalition partner withdraws support.

Dahal has already informed Speaker Devraj Ghimire of his intention to seek the vote.
