KATHMANDU: Nepal Police has confirmed the completion of security preparations for the upcoming by-elections scheduled for May 15 in Ilam-2 (House of Representatives) and Bajhang-1 (State Assembly).

In Kathmandu, a press conference was held by Nepal Police on Thursday, where security arrangements were discussed for both electoral regions.

Police have devised separate security plans for pre-election, election-day, and post-election periods.

Over 2,387 police personnel will be deployed in both districts for the by-elections.

Deputy Inspector General and spokesperson of Nepal Police, Bhim Prasad Dhakal, informed that the chief of provincial police will oversee direct observation and coordination during the elections.

A spokesperson stated that after analyzing the potential risks within the election areas, all security measures have been aligned.

The Ilam-2 constituency was left vacant after the sudden passing of former Speaker Subas Chandra Nemwang on Sept 12

Similarly, Prithvi Bahadur Singh, elected member of the State Assembly from Bajhang-1, lost his life in a fatal accident on July 10.

With both positions vacant due to unfortunate circumstances, a period of silence has commenced in both electoral regions.

According to Article 84, Sub-article 7 of the Constitution, if a member’s tenure exceeds six months, the vacant position is filled through the same electoral process used for their initial election.

Additionally, in accordance with Article 176, Sub-article 8, if a member’s tenure in the State Assembly exceeds six months, the vacancy is filled using the same procedure as the initial election.
